Etana's Music Video Competition Ends on High Note‏

Monday, February 8, 2010

IRISH and CHIN-After thousands of votes were casted by viewers for over a month, the Etana/RETV music video competition came to a remarkable close recently. The competition, which featured Etana's three new videos "August Town," "Free" and "Happy Heart," was the first of it's kind. And from the overwhelming response, the competition went over with a bang. Impressively, votes from through out the Caribbean inundated RETV.

Votes are still being tallied, with no winner determined yet and excitement is building up for the live finale on February 27 at 5:00 PM, which will feature Etana announcing the winning video and calling the competition's winners. Etana's fans are on the edges of their seats as they wait to find out if they will be winners of any of the competition's coveted prizes. Several times a day, after viewing the three videos, fans were prompted to text in and vote for their favorite video. Their texts/votes were then entered into the respective video's pot.

A lucky winner will be selected from each video pot. The voter selected from the third favorite video pot will receive an Ipod loaded with Etana's music. Meanwhile, the voter selected from the second video pot will receive a chic Blackberry Curve. And finally, the voter selected from the first video pot will receive an ultra savvy 13" MacBook. In addition to fans supporting Etana's new videos and music, the prize incentive also played a major role in attracting voters.

"This competition was one of Irish and Chin's unique vehicles of marketing Etana's Music," says Etana's manager Garfield "Chin" Bourne. "I am overjoyed by the response to the competition."

The results of the video competition will be hush hush until the live finale. Not even Etana will know of the winning video until it's announced on air -- that way one can catch her genuine, candid response.

"Although each of the videos is a #1 video to me, I am extremely anxious to see which one my fans chose as their favorite," says Etana.

Everyone who voted should keep their phones on between 5-7 PM on February 27, in case they are a lucky winner. If Etana calls a number and does not get an answer, she will move on and select another number. Viewers will be able to express their excitement live on air.

Etana on the RE school tour

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Etana signs autographs of young fans at St. Andrews TechnicalHigh School (STATHS) in Kingston, JA following a recent performance

Often infused with messages and real life stories, Etana's music is credited with moving all who listen. Riveting songs like "Wrong Address," "Roots," "Not Afraid" and the latest single "August Town" stay true to Etana's signature style. But beyond the soulful singer's love of music, lies a passion to help the youth. And through out her impressive career, Etana has taken pride in inspiring and motivating youth through music and many other efforts. Morevoer, the soulful songstress is especially vested in empowering young girls.
"I have always taken a special interest in the youth as they hold the key to the future," says Etana sincerely. "I am particularly driven to encourage young girls since they often don't recognize their full potential because of some of society's stereotypical roles placed before them."

Etana incorporates the message of abstinence while performingbefore STATHS students on the RE High School Tour.

"Overall, I want young girls to hold their heads up high and embrace their power......I typically tell them that they can do any and evertyhing once they put their mind to it," the singer adds.
With seeds deeply rooted in the youth, Etana regulary talks to The Young Reggae Girlz, Jamaica's under 17 and under 20 female soccer teams. A hit among the team members, Etana shares music and life experiences with the team and encourages the girls to respect themselves so that others can respect them. Etana indicates that a major part of "respect" comes with abstinence. Further, the artist lets the Girlz know that it's okay to be strong black women. But no talk is complete with out focusing on the central theme of education. A critical component, the artist declares "education is the greatest way to overcome poverty and be successful."
Motivational talks with the Reggae Girlz are just a snippet of Etana's commitment to the youth, as she regularly visits schools through out the world.

No matter where Etana is performing, she goes out of her way to visit schools in the respective area. While the youth are too young to attend most of her performances, she brings entertainment directly to them by dropping in on surprise visits. Regularly, Etana sings some of her best known selections and intermittently motivates the classroom to pursue an education, stay focused and make good decisions. She continuously lets the classrooms know that all things are possible with education.

Members of Jamaica's Young Reggae Girlz Soccer Team enjoy a visitfrom Etana.

In addition to these independent efforts, Etana is now a featured artist on the RE School Tour. Recently, the powerful Etana commanded the standing room only crowd at the Tour's first stop at St. Andrew's Technical High School in Kingston, JA. There, "The Strong One" belted out a string of hits to the 700-plus crowd and was ever-so amused when students sang the lyrics verbatim. Although Etana was pegged for a 3-song set, the crowd's overwhelming response made her stay to perform 2 more songs.

Through out her set, Etana consistently delivered the message of abstinence and staying in school to the youth and thanked the teachers for diligently molding and shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Etana is slated to perform on the tour each Tuesday that she is in Jamaica until the tour's end in mid-November. Etana willingly joined the RE School Tour for a second time because it's platform is directly in tune with her efforts involving youth.
Etana's work involving youth is ongoing. It is the singer's utmost goal to launch a youth-driven foundation in the future centered on the themes of education and empowerment. Plans for this foundation, which will formalize Etana's efforts, will begin soon.

In addition to the festival appearances, Etana will also perform in some of the country's clubs, reaching even more of her fans. Although this trip marks Etana's first time in South Africa, it is her third time traveling to Africa. In 2007 and 2008, Etana performed in Gambia and Ghana respectively. Her groundbreaking song "Roots" was inpsired by an encounter she had with a young boy in Gambia. Dedicated to uplifting all people through her music, traveling to Africa has greatly influenced her career and movement.
Etana has taken home numerous awards this year. Most recently, she won the "Album of the Year" award at the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in New York for her debut effort The Strong One (VP Records) and at the Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards (EMA), among a growing list of accolades.

Clearly, this performance exposed Etana's music to a diverse audience.
Etana's latest single "August Town" is being heralded by fans as a great, thought provoking song. Like many of Etana's efforts, "August Town" tells of a real-life, recent situation that occurred in her community. One can expect great things for Etana in the future, as she recently restructured her career, naming Irish and Chin as her exclusive management team and Headline Entertainment as her Booking Agency.

JORDU LIVE presents ETANA The Strong One

Monday, April 20, 2009

Jamaica's very own award winning vocalist Etana is getting ready to take the stage of "Jordu Live" by storm this Saturday April 25th at the Jordu fashion boutique located in 7th Avenue Plaza. This will be the forth chapter of the Jordu Live series which saw the likes of Queen Ifrica, Tanya Stephens, Tessanne Chin and now the soulful empress Etana. Patrons will get the chance to see and hear Etana in a more intimate setting and will be able to see all the hottest styles in fashion that Jordu has to offer.

Etana says " This will be my first ever up close and personal acoustic performance, that will have a very mellow kind of vibe were i'll be giving a mix of all my past and present songs, I'm so looking forward to meeting my fans and giving them a mind bobbling show".

Etana who recently returned from Barbados is busy promoting her latest singles "Blessings" featuring Alborosie and "Caltariba System", which are two of the hottest videos sweeping the airwaves both locally and internationally. Since her debut single "Wrong Address" Etana has followed up with influential and heart warming hits such as "Roots", "Warrior Love", "I Am Not Afraid"and "Don't Forget" amongst others.

As Kingston's newest and hottest live entertainment spot Jordu Live provides a unique form of interaction. According to IPC Entertainment director Mr. Douglas "Promoters should stop having one show with fifty artists because it doesn't allow the artist to really showcase the full extent of his or her talent. Jordu Live is the event that we all need as it brings out the performance through the audience, Etana is set to bring a wicked acoustic sound and like the others before it's a show you dont wanna miss. Although the production is fairly small its alot of work and so I must thank the Vice President of IPC Princess Ellis and the Jordu team for their dedication. Thanks also to past performers Queen Ifrica, Tanya Stephens, Laden, Big Ship,Tessanne Chin and all the fans who have made this event a success .

Limited Pre-sold tickets for Jordu Live are currently on sale at the Jordu Store for $1200.

Etana: Dancehall has a bright future

Thursday, April 9, 2009

The singer, who has emerged as one of Jamaica's biggest cultural acts on the back of songs like her inspirational hit Roots, says a lot of creative talent is emerging that will take the music to greater heights.

"Dancehall is on the verge of being very creative," she said. "You are going to find some very talented youths coming up with some well-put-together songs."

Emerging cry
This emergence of talent, she believes, will force some of what happens in dancehall today to change for the better. There has been an emerging cry in recent times about the violent and sexually explicit nature of some of the lyrics coming out of dancehall, given the rate of murder and rape being committed on the island.
It was on that premise that the Broadcasting Commission, the body mandated to ensure that the content being broadcast on Jamaica's electronic media is appropriate, recently imposed a ban on sexually explicit songs from the airwaves.
Members of the entertainment industry were livid, but the move by the commission was widely hailed. There is the perception, however, that more needs to be done.

Offending songs
But Etana feels that soon, many of the artistes who create the offending songs will be forced to become more creative. "I just don't think that adult poetry is an excuse for creating any ol' song for any child to sing," she said. "Music is something that children catch on to pretty fast. The more positive you can make it, the more positive the next generation can be. The influence of music is more powerful than governments."

The Learning for Life - Project Artiste programme is also something she believes will help force change for the better within the industry. Under the programme, about 40 young people are chosen from inner-city communities to learn skills that will allow them to be employed within the entertainment industry and thus be able to provide for themselves and their families.
